It’s been quite some time since I last found any of these in my mail, but my new-found 0inbox policy reveals them in a new way, and since the iScam section of this site needs a new contribution, I thought Ahmed’s mail about trying to scam the National Bank of Abu Dhabi for 12 million US dollars that ”the late Mr. Thomas Stone” deposited there before he died.

When you recieve mails like this, remember that any offer that sounds too good to be true, probably is too good to be true.

An American Iraqi Foreign Oil Consultant /Contractor with the Chevron Petroleum Corporation Company named Late Mr. Thomas Stone made a numbered time (Fixed) Deposit for twelve calendar months, valued at US$12,000,000.00 (Twelve Million) United State Dollars in my branch. Upon maturity, I sent a routine notification to his forwarding address but got no reply. After a month, we sent a reminder and finally we discovered from his contract an employer that is the Iraqi Foreign Oil consultant confirmed to us that he was actually dead.

Before the time of his death, he had on a visit to my branch office confided in me that no one except me knew of his deposit in my bank. Ahmed Al Ansari is most probably an alias, and if there ever was a Mr. Thomas Stone, and he left any funds, I’m quite sure that Ahmed Al Ansari has no means to get to them.

The punishment for theft in Abu Dhabi is to get a finger or ha hand cut off. Whoever even considering a venture like this, should note that the non-existing Ahmed Al Ansari will have the legal upper hand on you, and you will never be able to go to court after you have been ripped off, since you went into the scam well knowing that you where entering an illegal affair. In that way, this kind of 419 scams has quite a beautiful edge.

[uppdatering] Kontona verkar inte bli kapade, men det är en stark rekommendation att ni som har blivit drabbade av den här luringen byter lösenord på Twitter så fort som möjligt, innan bedragarna gör det åt er. Har ni samma konto på andra tjänster, som t.ex. Google, så glöm för all del inte att byta även där.[/uppdatering]

Uppdatering 2011-11-05: Johan E Johansson har grävt ännu djupare efter sanningen om YCDBSOYA.com och upptäckt att det faktiskt inte ens existerar något bolag bakom fasaden.

Det finns ingenting substansiellt över huvud taget kring satsningen. Sajten ycdbsoya.com är så gott som tom förutom vad gäller löften om framtida storhet. Det finns en massa gallimatias i form av pressmeddelanden på MyNewsdesk.com. Och i och med att ett antal online-medier automatiskt hämtar material från MyNewsdesk så finns det nu en mängd nyhetsartiklar som handlar om allt från att YCDBSOYA tänker köpa Stockholmsmässan till att YCDBSOYA anmäler Google och Wikipedia till finansinspektionen (av alla ställen) och annan total gallimatias.

Det finns också en produktdemo av någonting som man kallar mobila konserter om som man hävdar ska vara omöjliga att ladda ner. Det går naturligtvis alldeles utmärkt eftersom det är vanliga Flash-filer. Ni får inte missa demon. Den är… minst sagt tafflig och nog går den att ladda ner alltid:

Det var ju bara att välja Spara sida som i webbläsaren. Inga konstigheter… Lika lätt är det förstås att sprida filmen vidare, det är ju faktiskt bara en Flash-film. Klicka på bilden ovan för ett seriöst fnissanfall.

Det skulle alls inte förvåna mig om vi inom en snar framtid kommer att få se en hoper besvikna investerare som trodde på det som står i rött högst upp på alla sidor på ycdbsoya.com. Fast troligen inte så många som det skulle kunna vara.

Ju mer jag läser om YCDBSOYA.com och ju fler uttalanden och bloggkommentarer av Mikael Widengren jag läser, desto fler varningslampor börjar blinka på skitsnackometern. Först trodde jag, liksom många andra, att det var grunden till ett bedrägeri vi såg här. Men nu någon dag senare så tycker jag mig känna den omisskännliga doften av riktigt dålig koll i kombination med ett stort ego och bristen på människor med sund skeptisism i omgivningen. Jag känner att jag har sett det förut. I form av dåliga idéer som har stöpts om och presenterats för mig som briljanta nytänkande satsningar. Ibland har jag till och med fallit för dem ett tag…

Fröet till en briljant affärsidé fanns kanske där någon gång. Eller åtminstone en hyfsad idé. Kanske inte helt unik och faktiskt inte alls särskilt revolutionerande, men formulerad på rätt sätt hade tanken med webbaserade mässor säkert kunnat bli någonting. Men någonstans under vägens gång växte idén till en fix idé. Fixa idéer från folk som inte har hängt med i vad som har hänt på webben under några år blir lätt så här tokiga. Här har en ganska bra tanke om att sprida information i mobilt format fått växa utan tillräcklig feedback i from av insikter om att moderna mobiler hanterar webben lika bra som datorer och en total avsaknad av att ha följt med kring vad som faktiskt har hänt kring strömmande musik.

Jo, jag vet att jag har de välvilliga glasögonen på mig. Att sajten är så till bredden fylld med halvkvävda påståenden om samarbeten till höger och vänster, som gör att det ser ut som om man har samarbeten med några av de största varumärkena inom såväl mode som musik och elektronik kan man avskriva som en idog säljares behov av att ge sken av att projektet har kommit längre än det egentligen har. Det där känner vi också igen från många numera nerlagda projekt.

Själv kommer jag dock hålla YCDBSOYA.com på armlängds avstånd.

John Rempel from Leamington has fallen hard for one of these scams and I quite admire his courage for coming out publicly to talk about how he was scammed. And I do feel with him. We need some examples like this so that people actually understand that some of these scams are actually carried through.

Here’s a short snippet from the article:

A Leamington man has fallen prey to international scam artists who strung him along for more than a year with the promise of millions in cash, but ultimately bilked him and his family of $150,000.

John Rempel said he quit his truck driving job, lost friends, borrowed money and crossed the globe in pursuit of a non-existent inheritance, after he was contacted by e-mail in what is known as a Nigerian 419 scam.

Rempel said he borrowed $55,000 from an uncle in Mexico and his parents gave him $60,000 on credit to cover fees for transferring $12.8 million into his name.

“They’re in it now because of me,” said Rempel, 22, breaking into sobs. “If it wasn’t for me, nobody would be in this mess. You think things will work out, but it doesn’t. It’s a very bad feeling. I had lots of friends.

“I never get calls anymore from my friends. You know, a bad reputation.”

Then, the suggestion he actually makes, is just hilarious. I had to read it throuh quite a few times before I realized that ”Mr Chukwu” never actually names the deciesed investor, and that he actually only suggests that the the next of kin only will get 20% of the (non-exixting) 7.2 million dollars.

It’s a classic 419 scam. If you play along, there are multiple pitfalls such as the fact that Ekene Chukwu never states what kind of dollars (there is a vast difference between US dollars, Australian dollars and Zimbabian dollars…). But most importantly, you very well know that you don’t have a relative who is an investor in West Africa, and that you aren’t eligible as a next of kin. This means you can never really go forth to the police since you, in a way, will after all be an acomplice in a possilbe herigage scam…

When you get a mail that sounds too good to be true, it probably is. When you get a mail written in all-caps, it’s probably written by someone who isn’t quite sure about the concept of capitalization, e.g. someone who doesn’t have too good a grip of the language they are writing in.

When you get a mail without a to-address, it’s probably not posted to you alone. And, when you get a mail with differing from- and reply-to addresses… well.

The below request for an address is nothing but yet another scam. Just throw it away and forget about it.

You don’t have any relatives who have died in any car accidents in Birmingham, but the seed of a thought awakens in your mind.
