What is the Gotenborg SMS Lottery
Since this summer, there has been reports about various SMS lottery scams, that are said to be originated in Sweden. Personally, I don’t really think they are. Even though they state an address for a Swedish Post Office Box in Gothenburg. Mark the spelling (not Gotenborg) as it is spelled in the sting mail. There might be a P O box there, but I vage that all incoming mail is resent somewhere else.
The person who sent me this mail asked how the scammers could have the number to his mobile phone as well as his email address. And I have been asking myself the same. But then I recall various forms that I have filled out on the www where I put my cellphone number in the phone field hoping that it would keep various phone sellers away.
There should be a lot of shady registers around with both email addresses and mobile phone numbers. Even if they arent as easily accessible as the large databases of email addresses that scammers can purchase.

Dear Ahmad,
The thing with the lottery is that there is no lottery. It’s all a scam to try to make you pay them money for handling the payment.
(If someone fluent in Arabic reads this, please post a comment that explains this in words that Ahmad Talal Moussali understands.)

DEAR NIKKE,
ARE YOU GONNA TELL ME THAT IT IS ALL A DECEPTION FROM SOME OUTLAWS WHO PLAY AND LIE ON OTHERS USING THE NAME OF TOM FREDRICK AND G,S.LOTTERY?
January 27th, 2007 at 10:52 am
Yes Ahmad, it’s a sad fact, but the ‘Gotenborg SMS Lottery’ isn’t more real than… well the ‘Malmoe SMS Lottery’.

Dear Nikke,
I got a response from Susan Patrick. A certificate and approved letter. I have to phone Peter Axelson on +46701560507 A lady answered the phone and said that Peter is on a break and must phone back in an hour. Have they stolen my identity? What should i do? The lady sounded like a Nigerian
February 7th, 2007 at 5:59 pm
Nel,
That number is a Swedish mobile phone number that seems to be unlisted, so it is most probably a prepayed phone card of some kind. The phone could of course be situated in any country.
I really don’t think the scammers have stolen your identity. Most probably it’s all a scam to make you pay some kind of transfer fees.

Hello from Slovenia !!! I am received SMS from NORDIC SMS LOTTERY…. the same names……….O….. thanks to help me !!!!!!!!
Have nice day and nice life!!!
February 26th, 2007 at 3:13 am
I made some queries on the NORDIC SMS Lottery, because Susan (susanpatrick_gsl@mailup.net) told me through an email to send them to a certain Varis Olof (+46704051742)
Here is the content of his message:
Address: Kungsgatan 112
S-90187 Umea,
Sweden
Name: Interbank payment service
Foreign Remittance Department:
Dear Jefferson Clifford J. Tapaoan
You are welcome to the Nordic Lottery Payment Office an affiliate of
the Nordic SMS Lottery. I am pleased to be at your service and you
have been officially cleared for payment by the Verifications Department
at the headquarters of the Nordic SMS Lottery.
The original copy of your winning certificate, together with a covering
document (Money Laundering protection and Letter of Affidavit for
Claims) stating that the money was obtained
legally through the Nordic SMS Lottery is ready and has been sent
to the tax agency for processing
With regards to you collecting your money, it would be required for you
to either come over to Sweden to collect your money in person, office hours
is
between 10 am and 4 pm monday to friday and on saturday 10 am to 2 pm,
you are also advised that you should notify us of your arrival, so we
will send our staff to come pick you at the airport, secondly on
arrival, you are required to pay a tax and insurance fee to the Tax Agency
that
would issue a tax clearance to us and also issue an approval for the money
to be given
to you, the tax fee is 13,775 Swedish Krona, you are advised to come with
that
amount so you will pay to the Tax agency.
But if you are not able to come over to Sweden, then I would advise that
you contact the Tax Agency and find a way of send the money to
the them for the approval to be issued and we will collect the
tax clearance, then we will either make a bank transfer
of the money to you or we will send a bank cheque to you through a
courier company ( DHL or UPS ), but you will notify us of the best way
you would prefer the money been sent to you.
I know you would have prefer that the tax fee be deducted from the
amount you won, but your prize is protected by a hardcover insurance
policy, which makes it impossible to deduct any amount from the money
before it has been remitted to you. This means that no charges can be
deducted from the prize and hence must be provided by you before your
prize is transferred to you, and secondly you are the only person that
is liable to receive the money and not until the approval is received
from the tax office, the money cannot be transferred or deducted.
This is in accordance with section 13(1) (n) of the national gambling
act as adopted in 1993 and amended on 3rd July 1996 by the
constitutional assembly. This is to protect winners and to avoid
misappropriation of funds
Also be reminded that the deadline for the claiming of winnings is
exactly two weeks after the receipt of this email. After this period,
your cash prize will be deemed to have been forfeited by you and will be
reused in the drawings of the next edition of the lottery.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Good luck and Congratulations once again.
Regards,
Mr. Varis Olof
Head of Payment Office

February 26th, 2007 at 3:23 am
For starters, Mr Olof Varis (Olof is a first name and Varis is a surname) uses a prepaid mobile phone number.
Second. This type of lottery is strictly prohibited by law in Sweden, where we, like many other countries have national lottery monopolies for our gambling needs.
It’s a scam, and nothing else.
February 26th, 2007 at 5:41 am
Dear Nikke,
Thank you very much for your help.
Whew, these people always thrives on somebody else’s for their own gains. I had already some doubts before because I never entered or enlisted my mobile number to any lottery or whatsoever gaming stuffs. When this Mr. Olof replied, he couldn’t write a professional letter in English format, considering he’s a “HEAD” of a Payment Office.
Anyways, tt’s such a nice thing to have you around explaining these to us.

please answer me to this prize: is,t right or no? and whay there sending as this letteres
to anyone if was the prizes lies?
March 4th, 2007 at 3:13 am
They send them out since they want to fool you into paying the “tax”. After that they will probably try to fool you to pay more money, but since there is no lottery, you will never get any money.
Be warned. Don’t send them any money!

Hi Amber,
First of all, it wasn’t I who sent you the letter, nor anyone assiciated with this site. I’ve edited out your mobile phone number from your comment, since it might get you into more trouble with the scammers.
The people who sent you the mail act as false representatives for a lottery that doesn’t exist, and their only objective is to try to make you pay fees and taxes that are just as non-existant.
Please make sure not to pay them anything, nor send them any bank information.
Cheers,
Nikke Lindqvist
