i played the lotto for a mear $1. after weeks, i received a letter along the lines of, ”you emerged as one of the winners in the third category. Participants were selected via a computer ballot draw from 1,500,000 names drawn from europe, asia, & n.america. your name, attached to coupon#: 000-00000, with serial#: 000-000drew the lucky numbers #$@%^&*%(*which subsequently won the the lotto in the third category. you have therefore been approved for the lump sum of $120,000.00 USD. this is from a total cash prize of $3,500,000.00 USD, shared among 18 international winners in different categories. this is an annual competition organized since the new millennium in our noble drive to go global.
i called the number proveded: 011-44-7847854201 to speak with the printed designated ”Contact Claim Agent”, Mrs. Kathy Anderson. only to be told that instructions would follow upon my remitting a ”sponsor’s check” back to her ”alternate contact point,” in alberta, canada, where i could then receive the said winnings.
in speaking with my bankers, i was ”Alerted” as to this ongoing ”Scam!”
luckily, i did the research in finding that i was not the only person out here who has experienced this sort of ill/wrongful doings? be careful out there in your money attempt(s)?

I have read most the inserts from all of you who have been scammed. My 18 year old daughter was sent a check for $2968.00 in which she cashed. The letter attached to the check pretty much said the same thing you all are expressing. How can we shut this scam down?

i have recently got one of those emails. i am naieve….why do people do this??what would they do with the information that you give??

Maria, it isn’t as much the information as the money they will then ask you to pay to get you money. That’s why the scam is sent out by an agent. They will ask you to pay anything between 150 $ to a couple of thousand dollars. As much as they think you will pay.

But since there is no lottery prize, you will never see any money yourself.

Just think about it.
Why should they contact you in English?

If you received a mail similar to the ones posted here on this site, it is certanly a way to try to fool you to pay money in order to get to the money you now think you won.

First there will be a commission, then there will be taxes that the scammers say they will pay for you, then there will be bank fees, shipment fees, registration fees…. but never any money to you.

These scammers make a living out of fooling people.
Just throw the mail (or letter) away, and forget about it.

Oh, i’m having fun at the moment i have told mr. Sims Martins at the moment. I have just told him i have instructed my bank accordingly (i haven’t obviously, i’m not that silly) however will only release the money to them upon proving a FIA and Companies house registration numbers so i can check it again the data base held by The Department Of Constitutional Affairs, (God i love working in the financial industry!) therefore proving the legitimacy of their company. Anand, if you say you got the mail I’ve got to believe you, so in case you are a liar, I guess it is true that you got it.

However. The contents of the mail is just a scam and nothing to believe in. All they want is for you to pay them more and more and more money.

I recently recieved a check in the amount of 2995.50 american dollars the letter that accompanied the check said that I won 130,000.00 american dollars, all I had to do was cash the check and send them 2884.00 of it so that it would clear international fees and then 4920.00 would be deducted from my winnings as an agent commission my question is where is the money coming from for them to send checks out in such amounts, and if cashed how can they be sure the moey will be sent back in or are they betting that the recipient is greedy enough to try to get more money. please reply

You seem to haver received a new brand of this lottery scam. In fact it is an old check scam combined with the lottery setup.

I’m not sure where you live, but I guess it’s somewhere in the US. And if so, most states have the same old bank laws, where the bank can pay you the full amount of a check, and then later claim the money back from you when it turns out the check was no good.

And that is exactly what the scammers want in this case. They get you to send them almost 3000 dollars thay you will have to pay back to the bank later on.

Here in Sweden banks charge us 150 dollars to cash a check and we still don’t get the amount until the check has been cleared with the original issuing bank. If that taked two weeks, that’s how long we’ll have to wait for the money to come through.

The US system is faster, but much easier for a scam artist to mis-use.

I had a similar experience as Steve, I got a letter in the mail telling me that I won $130,000.00. They sent me a check in the amount of $2,840.00, which according to my agent, I should cash this check and send the cash by western union to their agent, Maxwell James in Canada, my agent, Melissa Brown, then verified that Mr. James recieved the money, she then told me that a courier would deliver my winnings to my home on Monday at 6pm, needless to say, no one showed up on monday or ever, I phoned Alpha Financial group. which is in Ontario, Canada and of course there was no answer and their voice mail was full. I called again a few days later, I got a live person and as I was talking to him about this matter, he hung up on me. Luckily, I did not give them any of my money, but I am furious that I fell for such a scam.

I recently received a letter in the mail from a company called Euro Lotteries. In it they claim that I had won $65,000. in the Euro Lotteries held in Dublin, Ireland. They also included a check for $2796.15 to enable me to finance the international clearance fees. The check is drawn on an Exxon Mobil account through the Bank of America.
At first I was excited and didn’t think the situation through completely. After thinking about it overnight I began to see all the red flags. I went online and imediately found your website. I’m grateful I did. It cleared up most of the questions I had.

This type of scam is most effective in countries like the US, where checks often are pre-cleared, and their victims often pay their fees without further consideration.

Hi, I am from the Philippines. I just got 2 similar emails today, 8 December 2007, from the same scamming people. How can we stop these bastards? I know better than to believe their scam, but what about others who would still fall for them?

Hi, I am from the U.S. and received a letter from the Irish Foundation Lotto. I new this was scam, seeing how I never even applied for a lottery, but they sent me a check of $3,657.90 from Audiotel Leasing INC. in California and the bank is City National Bank in CA. I was just wondering what would happen if I cashed the check and not send any money? Has anyone ever done that?

I received a mail today. This is a 3rd mail, what I got.

Did everyone else get a check with their spam letter? Mine was drawn on Wells Fargo Bank. I called Wells Fargo. I did not call the number on the letter, but did a web search for branches in the state the check showed. There was a branch listed – same address as on the check, called, Got a service rep who asked for the account number on the check and then told me it was an active account. Found this site when I googled the name on the letter, but the bank being real has to be an elaborate con to use a real number and route the call to a scammer. How do they do that?

Wow. I have no idea. Try cashing the check, but don’t spend the money until the grace period the bank reserves, which can be up to a couple of weeks.

Ask your local bank about it.

If it is a combined lottery scam/check scam. They intend for you to cash the check and then immediately send in the commission they ask for or pay any fees they are asking for.
After a few days, the bank wants the money back, and the scam victim has no way of getting the commissions and fees back.

I am so glad I found this website. I just got this letter yesterday and it is almost identical to Monicas. Thank you all! I spoke to the agent and when I asked for the phone number to the Lottery in Ireland he said he has to hang up with me and call upstairs to get the number and then call me back. Needless to say, he never called back! Anyway, here’s what the letter said.

I received the same letter as Pam. I thought it was too good to be true so I went online to further research it and found this. I am so glad that I did some research before I acted on it. The check looks very legit that I don’t know if should deposit it to my bank account and do as Nikke says.

Recieved the same letter as Pam and Irene.
