Microsoft Sweepstakes International Lottery Programme
(This is a classic!)
Yesterday I didn’t win 1,000,000 Euro again. But some scammer is pretending to represent Microsoft in order to cheet me on a couple of hundred dollars.
It’s a well known fact that lottery scammers use well known brand names and trademarkes in order to pull their lottery scams. I have previously published mails from the Google Lottery, and here is an email from a scammer who pretends to represent the software giant in Redmont.
How can I be sure this is a scam? Well, the fact that it is sent from and to a free email service (and not MSN or Hotmail) and that the contact address is a netscape.net address, must be considered to be somthing of a givaway… (And can someone please shed som light on the fact that most of these scammers use Dutch phone numbers?

I received almost exactly the same mail today, via micro-soft sweepstake , in Bandar Seri Begawan 1150, Brunei Darussalam. I won 3,400,000.00 euros !!! Have sent details to their solicitor to see what returns .

Virgilio whoever you are, you are ’small minded’ racists are probably better thinkers than you are. How dare you sloppily infer that this must be by some Africans!! I bet you never met a scammer who is African, yet i am certain you’ve met quite a few who do an honest day’s job to get by. I live in Africa and work globally and i can tell you that i have encountered Indian,Jamaicans,Americans and Irish people who have tried to scam my company in figures that make a $1m pale in significance. Does that give me the right to label Indians as scammers because there so many of them living in bloody Africa! Yes there are African scammers as there are Americans,Asian, etc and as well there are f….d up European, Asian and American countries as well. And please do not insult our intelligence by asking us to watch a film to understand a whole continent.What could be more shallow.

I’m not sure this is a discussion that we need, but after following several of these scammers for quite some years now, it’s clear that many of them eminate from countries with poor anti-fraud laws and week national police forces and/or heavy corruption.
Two of the most popular countries for scammers are Nigeria and the Philipines. That is clear.
As to Virgilio’s comment about Africans. You are of course right. But I really think that Virgilio meant to make a geographic description and not a racist or even ethnographic. When I say Britons, I mean anyone living in the UK and not the fair-skinned, redheads.
Let’s keep to the topic, and let’s not drift into a discussion of race here.
Scammers are scammers, regardless of skin tone or hair color.

No. Microsoft as a company doesn’t give away money on the base of random e-mail addresses. The message you received is nothing but a scam, intended to cheat you of your money, and in the worst case try to empty you bank account.
Don’t send any bank documents or xeroxed passports or anything. Just throw away the message and forget about it.

Hi! I received exactly the same message as you this morning!! It seems to me that they think that we are all stupid in the fact that we would not check out the web to see if it was a legitimate mail!! I received the same mail last week regarding coca cola and another one a few days ago but cannot remember what company they said they were from as i deleted it very quickly!!! Who the hell do these people think they are to play with peoples lives like this i think it is an absolute discrace and i hope they get in real trouble with the authorities if they ever get found out!!!!!!!!!!!!! I also received mail about one day ago informing me that I won the free lottery sponsered by Bill Gates and others and that my package is with the SwiftExpress courier and that they needed the same information as most of the others above. I emailed the courier company who said that they indeed have the winning cheque. How reliable is this information? Below is the mail which I received from the courier company.

The first thing that draws my attention in your mail is the fact that they use a yahoo.co.uk address. No real claims office would use a free e-mail service instead of a mail domain of their own.
If this claims process is linked to the Microsoft Sweepstakes, you could just call Microsoft and ask them if the lottery even exist. I did, so I can spare you the time. It doesn’t.

If I, the fairly seasoned internet cynic had even a little doubt about its veracity, I can really understand how they can lure in people who are more trusting. I guess the hope that we can have a lucky thing happen to us is really strong. They are preying on our hope. For those in real need it would be a very stong pull. Hi, I received the email of identical contents from the ‘Holland branch’ (presumably of ‘Microsoft’) a couple of days before, signed by pierce van Barsel and the other (the same day!) from Greg Smith, based in London. I replied to that email ( unfortunetelly) with my name, surname, telephone and temporary addresse. They sent me a reply asking about the copy of passport or driving license, which confirmed by suspicions, so I decided to check it on the internet. What is quite interesting in my case, I consulted an astrologer for a free reading 2 weeks before and she has ‘forseen’ that I am going to win an unexpected, big amount of money through lottery. The astrologer is called Jenna and she does not have a webside that can be visited by any internet user, as only after you send her your name and date of birth and she does a reading for you, the webside with that reading is sent to your email addresse and then you can enter it with your personal letter. I do not say there must be a connection, but I think that the coincidence is far too appealing to be ignored.

I too have received such an e-mail where I should have won 1 mill gbp. I knew it was a scam with a yahoo mail, but thought I call this man in UK, who was my contact. his name was Garry Jolly, and spoke a very bad english. I could hardly understand him which I kept telling him. Anyway I sent the information they wanted after having seen that there is no information about my passport or my bank. so now I am just waiting to see what happens - if they want any money from me or what. How dare they do thisto people. I wish there was a way to catch these people.

I think, these are all techniques to get the valuable personal data so that one could try to enter into your email id by changing the passwords using that data and after that they could stole your bank / card details (alongwith the passwords which one usually keeps in the email ids) to transfer the funds. So always be aware to not to give the exact data, what one could do is to give false datas and keep them trying. As i will be doing that..

I too receive the same email saying I have won a million pound. U would have been duped if it was in Amercan dollar. No offence but pound or euros are not saleable in othr part of the world.
Back to the lottery email..I think if we are not easily consumed by greed, then we would not fall for that scam. I definitely believe this is the work of Nigerian scam masters. No offence but Nigerians are known all over the world for their scam works. Never believe the Nigerians, period. They go from countries to countries cheating on people. Many have been victimised by them. Here in our country, M’sia, they cheat on single women, have sex with them, took pictures and threatened to publish them in the http://www. The victims have to pay some amount of money to prevent their pictures going to the http://www. There was a case of a woman who killed herself after her picture was published in the http://www.

Surely these scammers must know by now that we have sussed them out. I have recieved these dodgey emails and letters (Mostly letters) and here is how I deal with them. I send a nice reply back saying that I am delighted to have won the money and I wont be sending them the required amount…but DOUBLE the amount that they want. In sheer gratitude for my win because I am so poor, Live in a cardboard box and eat leftovers I find in McDonalds bins. They must accept my money and If they would be so kind, take it out of my winnings to save extra paper work. I also send their information back with this little comment in red felt tip pen. KISS MY HAIRY ENGLISH ARSE YOU HAVE BEEN SCAMMED BY A SCAMMER. I do this because I send it back in their envelope with : Addressee to pay postage at above address. Hehehehehe. I have rec’d the same e-mail this morning. But I also rec’d e-mails about jobs opportunities from the UK, telling me I can make over 5,000.00 weekly by cashing their check and paying their investors of course using my checking account. They are replying to me from career builders and Monster. Of course I did not reply. I also rec’d a check in the mail for 4,495.00, I called the BBB and they advised me exactly what I thought if was bogus. It was written from a Bank in Canada, so they gave me the number and I called. Again they verified that it was Bogus and now I have a case number if they can every catch the grow of people and go to trial. He ask me if I called the phone number on the letter and I told him no. I was advise that this is all organized crime and once they get your information they would share that information within the organization. Be aware and careful……

Yep, I got the same email. Glad I checked it out first. Although a red flag came up for me when I saw they wanted me to pay up to 650 bucks for my “winnings” to be sent to me. I thought, “hey, just take that 650 out of my ‘winnings’ ” It was tempting, though. Tempting enough to make me buy a lotto ticket.

It amazes me that anyone would ever think that getting an e-mail notice about winning any money at all would ever be real (especially hundreds of thousands), and even go so far as to provide bank information to anyone. The same goes for any business opportunity via e-mail, cashing a check for someone, any transactions involving money wires, etc. Everytime I get one of those e-mails, I forward them to an internet fraud center or to the authorities and wonder how they ever make any money at all. But apparently they must; I thought only the elderly were targets.
